Mission: A Day In The Life
It took Rynna a while to find a time when everyone who expressed interest in starting a band could get together. The time would have to change every so often as there really was no perfect time, but for now, this would do.
She brought a variety of drinks and finger food for the first meeting as this would be to assess who wanted to do what and who would be best for where. That, too, would change depending on who could do what. But however they settled things, this was going to be fun.
Cade checked the time on his chrono and hurried. It had been a busy day and he'd been behind almost from the beginning. Catching up on paperwork, assessments and working up a plan for the Betezoid studies that the XO had requested had caused time to sneak right past him. Instrument case strapped to his back, he walked through the doors after a brief pause to make sure he didn't walk into the doors.
Again.
Catching sight of Rynna, he said, "Am I late. Early or get the date completely off?"
Ryn shook her head. "You're on time--just a minute or two early. The others should be here shortly." She nodded to the table. "Grab a drink and some snacks while you can."
The door opened to the Prancing Pony, and Camelia stepped inside, she was carrying a guitar as well as an electric keyboard.
"Hello, I wasn't certain which to bring, so I decided to bring both. I don't think that a violin would work unless it was electric. I do know dubstep." looking at those who were there. "It looks like I am not late."
"We'll use whatever you bring. Vanya will probably bring her violin as well," Rynna said. "So we can see how you work together."
"Okay" giving a quiet nod, Camelia went to set up her keyboard and placed her guitar next to it.
Raf had been in sickbay talking with a pair of young officers on what to expect over the next 10 months when he noticed the time. Making his apologies, he saw them out of his office before grabbing his guitar and heading to the pony. He didn't know if he needed the instrument but better to err on the side of caution. After finally arriving, he spotted Ryn immediately as she chatted with others.
Moving over to the group, "Sorry for being late....a couple of young Ensign's with lots of questions."
Tuning his harp-guitar, Cade flashed a grin to Raf and said, "Well. They are Ensigns after all. They really can't ask too many questions or a bad one, for that matter."
"I'm just glad you're here," Ryn added to Raf, pleased that he made it. In truth, she was always happy to see him.
Vanya walked in, carrying a violin and viola. "Hello, everyone," she said, setting both instruments on a table. "This looks like a good group."
"It does, doesn't it?" Ryn said, smiling at her friend.
"I'm not late, am I?" Sebastian popped his head around the corner and looked at the group already assembled. Coming out from around the corner and walking in, he saw the instruments they all had and pulled out his replicated and tuned ukulele from behind his back. "Ah, I think we mostly all had the same idea with guitars. I'm Sebastian, by the way. Nice to meet you all." A warm smile radiated from him as he stood there.
"If everyone will take a seat, I'd like to know what each of you expects from this group and what type of music you like to play," Ryn said. "Feel free to grab some snacks, too."
Raf leaned back in his chair weaving his fingers together as his hand moved behind his head, an eyebrow arched in Ryn's direction. He could have fired off some innuendo laced comment about 'expectations' in her direction but smirked instead.
Rynna caught Raf's smirk and tried not to smile. She'd have to ask him about that later. "We could start with rock, unless you have other preferences," she asked the group. "Or we could start out with some improvisation. One person starts playing, and everyone joins in. Then we see where it goes from there."
Raf hadn't moved but glanced around at the others. "Is there a genre that anyone can't play or just can't do?" Adding with a jest, "Other than Klingon Opera, that is."
"I can probably do anything," Vanya said. "But I agree. No Klingon Opera or Vogon poetry."
"I don't play opera--Klingon or otherwise," Ryn said. "I'm not sure about flamenco or mariachi."
Chuckling as he pulled his guitar for his lap. "Ahhh come on now..." playing a few quick, energetic, cords from a flamenco, "...you might like it."
Raf's riff made Rynna laugh. "Point taken. You may have to give me some private lessons to see how I can do the music justice."
Raf looked at Ryn, tongue in cheek and was about to reply...
Door opened Craig walked in carrying his saxophone. "Still have room for a saxophone?" a warm smile showing.
"Of course," Ryn replied. "What sort of music do you like to play?"
Craig mused for a moment as to the question then gave a quiet smile.
"Melodic jazz, classic rock that has saxophones in it, such as Careless." he offered.
"I have a feeling a ukulele isn't moody enough for this get-together," Sebastian chuckled to himself and grinned as he watched the others talk around him. He began strumming the instrument quietly to the chord-only version of Somewhere Over the Rainbow. "Too happy for sure."
"I have no intention of playing just one kind of music," Rynna assured him. "People have different tastes, so I think we should play different music. The question will be, who wants to do what. I like rock and roll, mostly. But I can do other things as long as a keyboard works. Other music is better for guitars. Or ukulele."
She looked around the group, then added. "Maybe we should start with a jam. One person starts playing and those who want join in. Everyone can have a chance to start."
His guitar already in his lap he gave it a strum before moving to the edge of his chair and started in on a simple easy to follow piece; a little Sweet Home Alabama.
A moment later, Ryn joined in on her keyboard, blending with the guitar. This one she knew well. "Do you want to take the vocals?" she asked Raf.
Continuing as others joined in, "Why not everyone join in?"
As they reached the chorus, "Everyone...Sweet home Alabama
Where the skies are so blue, Sweet home Alabama, Lord I'm coming home to you..."
Ryn grinned as the room grew silent. "That was fun. How about this?" She then began the introduction to "Holding Out for a Hero."
They went from one song to another for a while, then Rynna announced the session was over. "We can meet again in two weeks, if that works for everyone. Bring what instruments and music you want to play. We can also split into smaller ensembles."
Camelia finally spoke up, a little bit wryly "And by then I'll be a bit more warmed up? I do apologize for seeming to be a bit occupied, and that my playing was a bit off key."
She didn't want to mention why her mind had been occupied. Not only was her mind on the ship but also on an assignment her brothers had given her. Right now, her assigned so called duty wasn't here.
Craig looked over towards Camelia wondering then turned to look at Rynna.
"Thank you, this was enjoyable. I'll be looking forward to the next time we play." giving Rynn a quiet smile.
While the others seemed to be wrapping things up Raf continued plucking at his guitar, playing some mellow tunes from home.
Rynna waited until everyone else left, then sat next to Raf, listening to him play. She hadn't been interested in Spanish guitar before, but the more she heard Raf play, the more she liked it.
Smiling at his singular audience member as he continued to play. "Perhaps something with some lyrics?"
Ryn smiled back. She loved his voice. "Yes, please."
He continued to play, "Any requests?"
"How about a Spanish love song?"
Raf gave her a broad smile as he stopped playing, resting his hand on his guitar as he thought. Nodding having decide on what to sing he glanced up, "Computer, disable universal translation."
His hands positioned themselves as he began to play....

She put a hand gently on the back of his neck and closed her eyes as she listened. It was so beautiful she had to wipe away a tear. "I love it," she whispered after he finished.
Lifting his guitar from his shoulder. "I'm glad you liked it." Tilting his head towards the door, "Wanna get outta here?"
"Yes." She made sure her keyboard was properly secured and that nothing was left behind. Then she kissed him. "I'm ready to go."
"Let's get outta here."
