And now the continuation
Marjani caught up to Edon, "Thanks, am appreciative of you being our pitcher." giving him a grin. The rest of the team were in high spirits, clapping each others backs.
The Bajoran grunted and was just about to duck into the dugout when he heard a chorus of high pitched voices shout his last name. Turning his head in that direction he saw several kids of varying ages, but none very old, pressed up against the railing that was in place to keep the fans in the stands on off the field at the far end of the dugout. Turning on his heel he headed in the direction of the kids.
My first name is Edon, not Akorem," he corrected them, looking the group of kids almost in the eye. "What can I do for you," he asked, looking around the group.
"We want autographs," one of the smallest piped up before anyone else could say anything. The Bajoran considered this request for a moment, seeming to be thinking about it, then he slowly nodded his head as he got an idea. "Got something I can write with," he asked. Almost instantly several pens were thrust in his direction, along with a handful of baseballs and caps and other things.
"Let's see here," he said, pretending to talk more to himself than to the young fans. "Hmm, yes I don't think I'll be needing this anymore," he said, ignoring the things the fans were trying to hand him and, instead pulling off his leather glove and signing it. "Anyone here that relocated from the Cardassian-Federation De-militarized Zone," he asked, looking around at the kids. Several hands popped into the air accompanied by a chorus of "me, me, me," from a few of the kids.
"Forcing you out of your homes was a bad move, here," he said, passing the signed glove to one of the youngest kids. She grabbed her treasure to her chest and scurried back to her parents before any of the other kids could try and take it from her. "Who else," he asked, taking his cap off his head and signing it next. In short order he'd passed it to another of the forcibly relocated kids who also quickly disappeared.
The glove and hat were followed, in short order, by the game ball and each of his shoes which he likewise signed. "Voodoo," he shouted over his shoulder at the woman, "bring me my batting gloves, bats, equipment bag, and batting helmet," he barked at her, watching the kids' faces light up at this announcement. Obviously, they suspected he was going to sign all the baseball stuff he had and give it to them. And why not?
The Knights were shipping out soon, and he wouldn't have much need of the equipment again for awhile. Of course, none of the rest of the squadron knew that yet. While he waited on Marjani to do what he had told her to do he continued signing baseball and caps thrust his way by the rapidly growing army of small children. Being a port city Shangri-la was usually the first stop for relocated citizens from the DMZ and today the Seagulls had even given free admission to all the relocated kids, so there were a ton of them at the game that day.
Marjani grinned, watching the kids faces light up when getting the belongings. She quickly obeyed Edon's request, bringing over his equipment.
There was something that was nagging in the back of her mind, not missing the significance of this. Something was coming up. She started handing him the items, "I take it we're going to be moving out?" she asked quietly.
"Let's put it like this," the Bajoran said, pulling a bat from the bag and signing it before passing it to another child, "you won't need it where we're going and if you do we can always replicate more." He signed each of his batting gloves and passed them to the kids. "Besides," he continued before raising his voice so the kids could hear him too, "I know better than most what it is to be kicked out of your house by the Cardassians," he spat the final word.
"I fought them on Bajor until they left. It's hard on everyone, especially kids," he gestured to the kids with another bat he had just signed before passing the bat to someone and taking his batting helmet to sign next. "If this will make them happy, they can have it. I'd suggest you get to signing."
Edon punctuated his remark by signing his equipment bag and forking it over to a pair of girls who were obviously twin sisters. "You'll need to share that, but here," he dropped two signed balls into the bag and the girls scampered away.
Marjani took what Edon said to heart, signing her own equipment and handing out to the kids. There were so many and it brought tears to her eyes thinking of those kids having to deal with leaving their home and having to come here. She had an even more growing respect for the bajoran. Each little tyke who received something, left with a little more of a bounce to their steps. Marjani ran out of items for her to sign, this included her baseball cap. There was on other item though she decided to sign and that was her pair of shoes. Those she gave to one of the kids, standing on the ground with stocking feet.
"Someone will get use out of them" Marjani commented with a chuckle.
"Hmm," Edon said, looking over the last half dozen or so kids. "I seem to be all out of things to give away. Except for this," he said before unbuttoning his jersey, signing it, and handing it over to one of the last remaining kids who quickly disappeared. "Well, I'm out of things now," Edon said, looking down at five disappointed kids. "But I have one more thing. The best treat. Go get your parents and come back down here. Go, go, go!"
The kids scampered off and a few minutes later all five had reappeared with three sets of parents trailing. The Bajoran watched until everyone else was pretty well out of the stadium, then he opened a small field gate at the end of the stairs the kids were standing on. "Well, don't just stand there like Ferengi Tube Grubs," he said, stepping out of the way. "Come on, we have places to go."
The kids piled through the gate followed by their parents and Edon closed it behind them. "Come on," he said, leading the gaggle of people back into the dugout and down a short tunnel in the direction of the Seagulls' clubhouse. "Let's see what the rest of the crew can give out”
Marjani followed after, helping to herd the kids and the parents into the locker room where the others are at. Amused at the excited nature of the kids as well as the parents. There were murmurs of excitement, the kids in awe of this happening. It was a surprised team when the parents and kids came inside.
"Well," Edon said, squalling to the rest of the team as if they were his fighter pilots, even though most were not, "don't just sit there like a bunch of brain-addled Pakleds, these kids want souvenirs and autographs and I've run out of things to give them."
With a jump the team did as they were told, not wanting to risk the wrath of Edon. Each one signing gloves, baseballs and some bats. The kids were delighted, also pictures were being taken with the team as well. It was a merry piece of chaos,an impromptu party, with snacks being brought in. Marjani found herself being the one handing out the drinks. She shrugged and said she didn't care.
"That's more like it," Edon said to himself, quietly ducking into his locker and grabbing a towel to throw around his shoulders and a change of clothes before disappearing in the direction of the team showers while the party was ongoing. His part in the little party, as far as he was concerned, was over.
The party started winding down, the parents of the kids, took them by the hand off to get some sleep and get situated. Marjani was thanked by the parents for the party, of which she told them. "I'll give Edon your thanks, it was his idea."
After they left, Marjani was teased about losing her shoes.
"Lost your shoes again, Voodoo?" one of the team members asked, leaning an elbow onto her shoulder, he was a tall lanky man.
Marjani growled, shrugging his elbow off her shoulder, elbowing him in the solar plexus with her own. "Hey, I decided to give my shoes to one of the kids,I see you didn't do the same."
Lanky oofed at her contact, doubling over.
"I'm going to hit the showers." Marjani commented, sauntering out of the room with her own towel.
"I hear a lot less noise outside in the clubhouse," Edon remarked, emerging from the showers still toweling off his hair. "I take it our guests have left?"
"Yes, they have departed, and wished to convey their thanks to you." a smile racing across her lips. "It was a good morale boost you put together, for both them and the team. Hopefully some of them will remember that there is trouble out there affecting others." Marjani responded.
"Good," was the Bajoran's one word reply as he breezed past Marjani and quickly retreated from the clubhouse altogether. There was much to be done in the next few days, including putting together a squadron briefing and recreational activities like baseball had eaten into some of the time he had to get all that work done.
Marjani watched as Edon disappeared from sight, then took her shower, leaving the others to clean up the after party mess. They were capable of it and she wasn't about to do so. Showered and changed into other clothing, Marjani headed towards the door of the clubhouse.
"Hey Voodoo, want to meet up in a little while?" one of her team-mates asked.
"No, I'm tired and want some shut-eye."
"Spoilsport." was the response.
"I can't go partying every night, a girl's got to have her beauty sleep. " said Marjani grinning. "Maybe tomorrow."
An arm wrapped around her waist, it was Lanky once more."Come on you promised." trying to wheedle her."After all you don't need any beauty sleep, you're always beautiful."
Marjani frowned, her elbow moving slightly towards the guy's stomach.
"Hey watch out for her elbow, its a registered weapon." one of the other player's pointed out.
"Er right." Lanky quickly moving his arm from about her waist and stepping out of the reach of her elbow.
"Besides you don't want any bad luck following you do you?" Marjani commented with a wicked grin and gazing up towards Lanky's eyes.
"Er.. no don't want that to happen either." Lanky said.
"Just remember they say she is a descendant of a voodoo priestess. She could put the hex on you." another player added, giving Lanky a hardtime.
"And on that note, I'm out of here boys." Marjani called out, waving a goodbye.
