Mission: A Day In The Life
[PREVIOUSLY]
Finishing off a bite of beans. "I was thinking there might be a request or two but when I was enroute I looked over the layout and was pretty happy with what I saw. I mean I know I won't have the resource I did on DS4, I can't expect that I would. Lieutenant Marlow, Lily, had mentioned her interest in alternative medicine and I was looking at where we could set up an acupressure/puncture table for her but there is the holo-therapy room and she can program whatever is needed."
[CONTINUED]
"That would be nice. I'm sure she'll have a number of people interested in that. I haven't used much acupuncture or acupressure, but I like a good massage."
Picking up his glass. "Then, outside of just calling up a program on the holodeck, she'll be the one to see. Though I've been told before that I have magic hands...".
Rynna picked up her glass and sat back, grinning. "We'll have to see about that," she teased.
Setting his glass down, "Ohh! There is a question I do have for you."
"What's your question?"
"I this is probably a longshot, but by chance would you have a friend at Utopia Planitia?"
She thought for a moment. "Not that I know of. Why?" Not unless a friend transferred there recently.
"Oh, nothing important. Just trying to hook my nephew up with a surprise, but I will have to come up with something else."
"Your nephew works at Utopia Planitia?" She wasn't sure where this was going, but she was curious.
Chuckling, "Ohhh nooo...he's only 13 and VERY into starships. I saw that there was a Vesta class, which is his favorite, under construction."
"Ah. Well, I can see if there's someone I know from the Academy. Or I can ask if I can have a quick look." She flashed him a quick grin. "And if I can, I'll ask if I can bring two guests with me."
Raising his brows, "That would be greatly appreciated, but don't go to too much trouble." With a huge grin he added, "But it would make me the number one uncle. Especially since by brother hasn't been able to deliver as yet."
"Well, I can't promise anything, But I will try." She wouldn't mind having a look herself, if she could swing it. But she was also aware that a lot of people probably asked. She'd check to see if she knew anyone there first. Then ask directly.
A random idea popped into his head. "Perhaps if everything works out we can combine it with some explorations of the Spacedock?"
"Sure. I'd like that."
"Perfect!" Picking up his glass held it in his hand. "So, tell me, did you come over from the Majestic as well or are you new around her like I am?"
Rynna pushed her plate away before responding. "I came over from the Majestic, but I was only on the ship for a day before we came to earth and changed ships. So, I'm not sure if that counts for much."
"Of course it counts. Your just not as new as I am, but that's definitely a short turnaround. Hopefully you didn't get too far unpacking, or was it a planned move?
"I had time to settle in, then I got to pack again." She grinned. "But I don't have too much. Well, in my quarters, anyway. My office is another matter. But I'm settled in now. How about you? How are you settling in?"
He chuckled. "Most of it is still in cargo bay 3. After almost 7 years on a starbase you can accumulate a lot of stuff. I really need to go through it all and send what I don't need to my folks place on Earth."
"Probably a good idea. Have one place you can store things while you move around. Then, if you ever decide to settle down, you have everything you need." She smiled. "I hear it works well. Right now, most of what I collect involves tools and a few mementos."
"Yeah. I know what you mean. If I find a set of camping or climbing gear I like...it gets added to the collection. Plus, I was basically adopted by the Marines on the DS4 so I ended up getting stuff from them from time to time...plaques, weapons, coins, bruises..."
"Well, everything but that last item sounds like fun," Rynna flashed him a grin. "Then again, it depends on how you got those bruises." She knew from personal experience that climbing could definitely do it.
He chuckled, "Most of the bruises came from sparing matches. When I first got to DS4 the medbay I managed was in Marine country and one doesn't typically see broad shoulders in a blue uniform so one thing led to another and I began doing my workout with them. Including stepping into their fight ring."
She grinned mischievously. She had noticed the broad shoulders. "That does make sense. The only question I have now is, how did you do?"
Leaning back, he spread his arms in mocked offense. "Heeeeyyyy."
She looked him over carefully, pretending a seriousness that was contradicted by the sparkle in her eyes. "Well...you look like you're in one piece. That's a good sign."
"Yep all fully functional. Though it really wasn't fair for them."
"I will take your word for it. That's not something I should check in public," she teased. She chuckled softly as she added, "However as I've never gone hand-to-hand with a Marine, I'm probably not qualified to comment on that, either."
"They use a mixed approach that combines existing and new hand-to-hand and grappling techniques with edged weapons, weapons of opportunity, and rifle techniques. It can make them very unpredictable if you tend to focus on a single art."
"That sounds interesting to watch. If you spar again while we're on the Orcrist, let me know. I'd love to see your moves."
He raised an eyebrow at that as he smiled. "I'll keep that in mind. Do you practice any martial arts?"
"Not yet. It's on my to do list, but I always find something that is a higher priority," she admitted. "I'm more of a dancer."
"Really? Then you must have some moves too. Seriously though with dance you're already a good portion of the way there." Counting things of as he spoke; "Coordination, strength, endurance...done. And learning a form is no different than learning a series of dance moves."
"Good to know. Now the question is, do you know a good holodeck program for beginners?" She had considered learning, and a new ship was a new time to try something new.
"Nonononono... If you wanna learn from a live person. There is usually someone on a starship teaching a martial arts class. If not perhaps I'll start one." He paused slightly, "You mentioned climbing. Have you ever tried any sky diving or wing suit."
"I've only been skydiving once. Climbing and Kayaking are things I can do by myself on a holodeck or a planet. I'm competing against a clock or just getting to the top." She shrugged. "I think skydiving is better if you do it with a buddy."
"True. The reason I bring it up is that by brother and I have this program...a bit of a competitive program."
Rynn had a bit of a competitive streak herself. That sounded interesting--and fun. "Really? What sort of program?"
One side of his mouth curled, "It's an infiltration and avoidance program. You have to infiltrate and make it to the summit of Mt. Seleya and para-glide while avoiding capture. There is a series of distance markers in the program and my brother and I have a bit of a competition going as to who can make it further."
"And how far have you gone?" She also wondered who had gone farther.
He shrugged, "Well right now my brother is ahead, but not for long." He added grinning.
She grinned back. "Good. I'd offer to be your cheerleader, but that probably wouldn't help." The idea of cheerleaders with pom poms for a rock climbing event wasn't practical or even desirable, but the image of a team doing routines from an aerial platform made her chuckle.
"Haha... You never know, at the right place and time, that just might distract the programs authorities.
"Maybe. But then I'd be banned from any future events." She shook her head before giving him a mischievous grin. "I'd rather watch your moves. I don't have your strength or reach, but I'm sure I could learn something."
He grinned, "Sounds like a plan. I will let you know the next time I plan to use the program and will set the program so that you are an observer."
She grinned back. "Thanks. I'd like that." And she would, too. She liked his personality and his sense of humor. She'd enjoy watching him compete. And she'd probably end up turning into his cheering squad if she wasn't careful.
"Great! I will let you know when I plan to suit up. Unfortunately, I do have to get back to it. We definitely need to do this again."
"Any time." She enjoyed his company and would like to get to know him better. And perhaps, if she could pull a few strings, she'd see him tomorrow.
Pushing back from the table, he rose. Looking down to her with a smile. "See you soon."
